Metaverse and The Internet

In our first article, we provided information about basic questions such as what is Metaverse and how Metaverse is created. In this article, we will provide more detailed information about the virtual part of Metaverse, the concepts of reality that will enable us to better understand Metaverse, and its usage areas.
 

What Exactly Does the Concept Metaverse Mean ?

First, let’s remember the definition of Metaverse once again. The metaverse consists of a combination of 3D collective persistent spaces connected and shared in a virtual universe. Although, some people think that the Metaverse is the future of the Internet, or that it will replace the Internet. But the concepts of Internet and Metaverse are quite different from each other in terms of both the virtual reality technologies that Metaverse contains and about the services which both of it offer to its users.

Metaverse provides the user with a space independent of the computer screen by using the technologies containing augmented reality, which are increasingly developing today. In order to understand better what the Metaverse is, we need to know about the concepts of virtual reality and augmented reality. Virtual reality (VR) is a fractional field simulation and by using VR equipments completely replacing our real vision. It shows a virtual reality to its user where the user can interact visually, audibly or both. On the other hand, Augmented reality (AR) provides addition of the things we perceive in the real world by the computer using sound, image and location data and gaining a three-dimensional interactive appearance. To explain it even more simply, it is the addition of digital objects or data on the physical images that we can already see.
 

What Can Be Done in Metaverse ?

When the development of the Metaverse is fully completed, it would be true to say that everything we normally do can be done inside this virtual universe. Users can participate in various cultural activities, can do shopping, playing games, travelling cultural sites or do different social activities with the characters they control, or in other words, with their avatars. Metaverse will also be an important support on issues such as decentralized governance, digital identity and digital asset ownership.
 

Which Metaverse Universe ?

Even if it seems like we are talking about a single virtual universe when we say metaverse, many different platforms similar to metaverse are currently online. These platforms are oriented towards different usage purposes. For example, the game-based socialization platform Second Life can be given as a good example. However, another platform, Decentraland, which is a browser-based 3d World that allow its users to trade NFT’s, even buy/sell virtual plots by using its own cryptocurrency, MANA. Although blockchain has rapidly growing popularity in the world, applications or software related to blockchain have been developed just in a very short timelapse. At some point, crypto assets developed with blockchain technology intersect with Metaverse. We will use blockchain technology, and therefore cryptos, to protect the property rights of any asset owned in the Metaverse universe, to prove its ownership and to ensure the security of virtual value transfer. Blockchain will have massive importance in the Metaverse with its decentralized structure, value transaction speed and advanced security for the transfer of virtual assets. Blockchain ecosystems also allow different Metaverse platforms to be easily interconnected. For this reason, investing in both blockchain ecosystems, cryptocurrencies and Metaverse applications based on blockchain technology has become very popular among technology companies and individual/institutional investors. Giant companies such as Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Facebook (Meta) follow the development of Metaverse very closely. While developing their own projects, they do not hesitate to invest in already active platforms and applications both in Metaverse and some blockchain based applications. Furthermore, it can be seen that they already add these virtual assets to their balance sheets by to create a reserve.
